Should I Cover My Air Conditioning Unit for the Winter?

Should I Cover My Air Conditioning Unit for the Winter?Last week, a Lakeville customer called to ask me, “Should I cover my air conditioner for the winter months?”  Good question.

Here are some tips for prolonging the life of your air conditioner.

Turn off the circuit breaker for your air conditioning unit.  This will prevent you from accidently turning on the air conditioner in the winter and damaging the unit when the water freezes.

Clean off the dirt and dust from your air conditioning unit.  A garden hose works nicely for this job. If there are any leaves or twigs stuck in the compressor remove them.

Allow the air conditioning unit to dry. Make sure you dry the top of the air conditioner as any water left on top of the condensing unit so it does not rust during the winter.

Cover your unit a tarp or plastic air conditioner cover. The cover will keep water and snow out of your unit and prevent rusting of vital parts. Secure the cover with bungee cords or ties to assure that it does not blow off in the wind.

Do these simple tips to protect your air conditioner investment.
